Pierre Hel was a French violin maker of the 19th century. He was born in Mazirot in 1842. He moved to Paris to study with the famous violin maker Sébastien Vuillaume and worked in his workshop until he opened his own workshop in Lille in 1895.
Hel was known for his precision craftsmanship and his ability to copy the great Italian masters. He produced a varnish that was very similar to Cremonese varnish. His instruments are characterised by a warm and balanced sound and were appreciated by many famous violinists.
