Armando Piccagliani was born in Modena, Italy, in 1879. During his career, he crafted 600 violins, violas, cellos and double basses. Piccagliani made many instruments inspired by the classic design of a Stradivarius. In 1922, he won gold medals in Genoa and in 1937 presented several instruments at the exhibition competition in Cremona marking the 200th anniversary of Stradivari's death.
His style bears some similarities to the production of the Carletti and Sgarbi families. The edges are generally rounded and the corners small, with a distinctive white edge strip. The scrolls are quite wide and end with a rounded eye. His son Antonio continued his father's work.
Piccagliani's work is outstanding in quality and tone. He most often used a red-orange varnish, and his craftsmanship is characterised by great precision and accuracy.
