This special violin comes from an important collection and is close to mint condition, representing an outstanding piece of French craftsmanship and artistry. A beautifully flamed, one-piece maple back is covered with a rich orange-brown varnish on a golden ground. The violin produces a bright, rich tone and is suitable for the established musician or aspiring soloist.
Gand & Bernardel, 1866–1892, was founded in 1866 after the death of Charles Adolphe Gand, Charles Nicolas Eugène Gand and the Bernardel brothers Gustave Adolphe and Ernest Auguste, forming the highly productive and successful Parisian company Gand & Bernardel.
From 1866 to 1901, the company produced over 1,000 instruments and bows, many of the highest quality, and became one of the most renowned companies in the history of violin making. Most of the instruments are based on classical Cremonese models.
Gand learned his craft mainly from his father Charles François, who was a pupil and son-in-law of Nicolas Lupot. The Bernardel brothers studied under their father Auguste Sébastien Philippe, who was a pupil of both Charles François Gand and Nicolas Lupot.
Before Caressa & Français bought the company in 1901, Gand and Bernardel employed some of the best violin and bow makers of the time, including Charles Peccatte, Vigneron père, Pierre Simon, Joseph Henry, François Nicolas Voirin and Claude Thomassin.
It is a fine and beautiful violin with the original maker's label.
